The Virgin Mary to The Three Children:

"Our lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form, like transparent burning embers, all black and or burnished bronze, floating about in the conflagration, now raised into the air by the flames that issued from within themselves together with great clouds of smoke, now falling back on every side like sparks in a huge fire, without weight or equilibrium, and amid shrieks and groans of pain and despair, which horrified us and made us tremble with fear. The demons could be distinguished by their terrifying and repellent likeness to frightful and unknown animals all black and transparent. This vision lasted but an instant. How can we ever be grateful enough to our kind heavenly Mother, who had already prepared as by promising, in the first Apparition, to take us to heaven. Otherwise I think we would have died of fear and terror.
We then looked up at Our Lady, who said to us so kindly and so sadly: "You have seen where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace. The war is going to end; but if people do not cease offending God, a worse one will break out during the pontificate of Pius XII. When you see a night illumined by an unknown light, know that this is the great sign given you by God that He is about to punish the world for its crimes, by means of war, famine, and persecutions of the church and of the Holy Father. To prevent this, I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart, and the Communion of reparation on the First Saturdays. If my requests are headed, Russia will be converted, and there will be peace; if not, she will spread her errors throughout the world, causing wars and persecutions of the church. The good will be martyred; the Holy Father will have much to suffer; various nations will be annihilated. In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me and she will be converted, and a period of peace will be granted to the world."  (Pg.108-109)

The Virgin Mary to Sr. Agnes Sasagawa (formerly devout Buddhist):

"My dear daughter listen well to what I have to say to you. You will inform your superiors. As I previously told you: if men do not repent and better themselves, the Father will inflict a terrible punishment on all of humanity. It will be a punishment greater than the deluge (Flood in The Book of Genesis), such as one that has never been seen before. Fire will fall from the sky and will wipe out a great part of humanity, the good as well as the bad, sparing neither priests nor faithful. The survivors will find themselves so desolate that they will envy the dead. The only arms which will remain for you will be the Rosary and the Sign left by My Son. Each day recite the prayers of the Rosary. With the Rosary, pray for the Pope, the bishops and priests. The work of the devil will infiltrate, even into the church, in such a way, that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, bishops against bishops. He will know how to encourage each one of you to pray and to accomplish works of reparation ..." ("This particular excerpt from the message of Akita is what in fact convinced Cardinal Ratzinger that this was indeed a true apparition site, the reflection of The 3rd Secret of Fatima.")

n 1939, Russia (The Soviet Union) invaded Poland, which marked the beginning of World War II. It was in the midst of the great suffering of World War II that devotion to the image of the Divine Mercy began to flower.

One young Polish man, studying for the priesthood in secret, would later as Archbishop of Krakow, begin the investigation into Faustina’s life and virtues. He would beatify and canonize her many years afterward when he became Pope John Paul II.

Another Polish priest, Fr. Joseph Jarzebowski, escaped in the middle of the war through communist Russia and Japan to take the message of Divine Mercy to the United States. He promised Our Lord that, if he made it safely, he would dedicate the rest of his life to spreading this devotion. He arrived in the U.S. in 1941, which led to the founding of
The National Shrine of the Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

"I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish. I also promise victory over [its] enemies already here on earth, especially at the hour of death. I Myself will defend it as My own glory." (Diary 48)

At the request of her spiritual director, St. Faustina asked the Lord about the meaning of the rays in the image. She heard Jesus reply:
"The two rays denote Blood and Water. The pale ray stands for the Water which makes souls righteous. The red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of souls. These two rays issued forth from the depths of My tender mercy when My agonized Heart was opened by a lance on the Cross. Happy is the one who will dwell in their shelter, for the just hand of God shall not lay hold of him. (Diary 299)
